Character Interview – Guest Post with Melissa Holliday

Okay, people! So today I have a guest on my blog.

Everyone meet one of my best friends, Melissa Holliday. She and I met and bonded on a crafting and writing group. She’s such an incredible blessing and an amazing friend, and has helped me out with lots of things. She has the distinguished honor of being the first person outside of my family to read draft five of Spinner of Secrets. She’s also one of like twelve people who has my cell phone number, haha.

For this week’s post, I’ll be interviewing one of Missie’s characters, Harmon Cobb. This is the first time I’ve done one of these so, here goes!

ALT: So, today I’m interviewing Harmon Cobb, a young pastor who was in a horrible auto accident when he was a child, leaving him scarred. That hasn’t prevented him from going out and doing things with his life, though. Harmon, let’s start with the usual, getting to know you questions. First off, how old are you? Married? Have kids?

HC: I’m in my mid twenties, fresh out of Bible college. Not quite married yet, but hopeful that the Lord will provide a wife in His timing (hint, hint, Anissa!). No kids. Those will come after the wife, I hope!

ALT: What’s your favorite color and why?

HC: Favorite color… Well, I love the shade of dark blue Anissa wore to church last week. It was a dark, gray blue color, like the sky right before the dawn when it’s kind of rainy and foggy.

ALT: What’s a childhood memory?

HC: Childhood memory. The most traumatic would be the accident that crippled my brother and left me with all these scars. But I can’t necessarily view it as all bad. Because of the accident, a lot of good things happened. I can honestly say I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t been in the accident.

ALT: What’s your favorite season of the year?

HC: Definitely summer. After all, I met Anissa in the summer, so that makes it special.

ALT: Would you rather be work an office job or a labor type job?

HC: Hmm, it’s hard to pick. I might enjoy working in the office for the winter months, but during nicer weather, I want to be out and about working with my hands.

ALT: Oh, so both. I’m the same way. Next question… Are you ready for this one? Who was your first romantic interest?

HC: No questions there. The first girl I was ever interested in was Anissa. Truly love at first sight.

ALT: That’s great. We’re right in the middle of the holiday season. What is your favorite holiday and why?

HC: Favorite holiday? Actually, I don’t know if I have one. I like family time, so any holiday that gives me a reason to get together with everyone is my favorite, not just Thanksgiving.

ALT: So family sounds pretty important to you – what does yours look like?

HC: My family is very close knit. There’s no secrets- mainly because we don’t have any reason to keep them, but we couldn’t even if we wanted to (yes, Dad, I’m looking at you and thinking of your eavesdropping). My parents have been married for nearly 30 years, and only have two sons, my brother and I. Mom is a typical mom, she cooks, fusses over her sons, and insists that she and Dad know better than we do how to handle our lives- and she might not be wrong. My dad is a strong man, firm in faith and honest beyond belief. Jasper my brother is a great brother, always supportive of me and encouraging when he knows I’m needing it.

ALT: You’re a pastor. Do you enjoy your work? Is it stressful?

HC: Weeeell, right now I’m a temporary pastor. A friend of mine needed to go be with his son for surgery so I’m filling in for him. It’s stressful! Not to mention, this is the first time since I graduated from Bible college that I’ve been in charge, so to speak, of an entire congregation. But I do love it. The people are friendly and I’ve never enjoyed anything more.

ALT: Do you have any pets? What’s your favorite animal and why?

HC:
Favorite animal. Well, it’s definitely not Pastor Mill’s (my friend I’m filling in for) dogs, Rank and Moe. Those rascals are nothing but trouble. If I had a favorite animal, I’d say goldfish. They are quiet and don’t interrupt one’s studies or sermon writing.
ALT: What do you usually do in your spare time, assuming you have any? 😉

HC: Spare time…. Right now it’s fixing stuff for families in the church. Hot water tanks, stoves… Oh wait, those were both at Anissa’s house. Well, I guess most of my spare time is being spent helping her and her family.

ALT: You keep mentioning Anissa, why don’t you tell me a little about her?

HC: Anissa. Wow, where do I start? She’s beautiful, to start with. Her hair is the most perfect shade of brown, her eyes are always searching faces as if looking for the truth behind their words. From what I gather, she’s had a rough life. I know her father passed away, but I’ve yet to be able to find out anything else about him from her. She plays piano beautifully, though you daren’t tell her that. I’m still praying about it, but I believe that she’s ‘the one’ and I’m going to do my best to seek God’s will about her. She seems to be warming up to me- or at least her mother and sister are. Her sister is… well, she’s something else.

ALT: Oh, I bet. Siblings usually are. Well, thank you for your time, Harmon, and I wish you luck with Anissa!
