Diving

Diving
Annie Louise Twitchell

breath

plunge

cutting through the water
my hands like a knife blade
forcing a path through
soaking
wet
cold
biting

silent

down
down
down

breathless

up

kicking, kicking,
breaking the surface again
roaring
rushing
water swirling
air
fresh
hair wet, pushed out of my face
sucking in a breath
climbing up
onto the raft

breath

plunge

again.
